Melamine: Application Development Promotes Industry Reshuffling

As an important organic raw material for fine chemicals, melamine has seen rapid growth in demand at home and abroad in recent years. The continuous increase in consumption has affected the direction of development of the melamine industry. It will continue to adjust its industrial structure in the new competition and will eventually achieve industrial upgrading in the next few years.
In recent years, the excellent physical and chemical properties of melamine have made it increasingly popular in traditional and emerging fields. As a large consumer, the current wood processing industry consumes 70% of China's melamine output. Technological advancement has led to the rapid expansion of its application in the paint industry. In the United States, 40% of melamine is used in the coatings industry, and its market application in China is also of great potential. At present, the world's production capacity of melamine moulding plastics has exceeded 2 million tons, and the melamine moulding plastics industry in China has also entered a stage of rapid development. The annual growth rate is expected to exceed 15%. In addition, as a flame retardant for foam plastics, melamine has received increasing trust and attention from people.
Through the analysis and development orientation of the current melamine application field, there is reason to be optimistic about the development prospects of the melamine downstream industry. In the traditional wood processing industry, due to product upgrades, the amount of melamine is continuously increasing, and the annual demand growth is above 10%. The application of engineering plastics, polyurethane foam, etc., has brought melamine into new industrial fields; the domestic fertilizer companies are even more He is keen on melamine, because it is the most mature technology in the deep-processed products of urea production companies. As an attribute of agricultural products, urea enjoys many preferential policies for supporting agriculture in the country. This is the fundamental reason why the domestic melamine industry has flourished in recent years.
The lucrative profits will surely accelerate the further development of the melamine industry, and through the competition in the development process, the survival of the fittest and the gradual integration with the international market. At present, the maximum capacity of the international melamine plant is 120,000 tons/year, while the maximum capacity of the single melamine plant in China is only 30,000 tons/year. Integration with the international market is an inevitable rule for the development of China's melamine industry. Iron and steel, chemical fertilizers, automobiles, and home appliances have all followed this rule. Therefore, the domestic melamine plant will develop in the direction of large-scale single-line capacity, energy-saving, and intensive production, and will be the trend of the times.
At present, a new installation of 30,000 tons/year of Shanxi Fengxi, 100,000 tons/year of Sichuan Meiqing, and 100,000 tons/year of Sichuan Yuxiang has been under construction. The single sets of new installations of Meiqing and Yuxiang have a production capacity of 50,000 tons/year. They are all third-generation technologies developed by Tsinghua University and are at an advanced level in the world, which has aroused widespread concern from foreign companies. It is expected that after 2008, China will form five melamine bases in Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Sichuan and Xinjiang, and the production capacity of a single enterprise will not be less than 50,000 tons. Among them, Sichuan is the winner. In the next 2 to 3 years, the province's melamine production capacity will exceed 300,000 tons/year.
It can be foreseen that the gradual development of China's melamine industry, which is capital-intensive and technology-intensive, will show stronger and stronger competitiveness in the international market in the future, which will lead to the adjustment of the global melamine market. However, at present, the development of downstream products of melamine in China is still relatively backward compared to the international market. At present, there is no uniform standard for melamine-formaldehyde resin used in wood processing industry. Each enterprise is independent of each other and its physical and chemical indicators are very different. The quality of products produced by various companies is also very different. There are also contradictory differences between technology and the market for melamine molding compounds and melamine nitrogen flame retardants.
Experts in the industry believe that melamine production enterprises should give full play to the role of industry associations, coordinate with relevant state agencies, upgrade the corporate standards of downstream major production companies to national standards as soon as possible, and actively participate in the basic research of downstream products. At present, Sichuan, Haihua and Sanming Chemicals have entered the field of molding powder. Unfortunately, none of the three raw material companies has become an industry leader. Recently, Zhongyuan Dahua and Beijing Triazine Chemical successfully developed melamine foam, which broke the international monopoly position of BASF in Germany. This should inspire the development of the melamine industry.
