Toyota Motors Launches Pixi Space, the First Mini Vehicle

On September 26, 2011, Toyota Motor Corporation announced the launch of the Pixis mini vehicle at its dealership network in Japan, which means that the Toyota brand will enter the mini vehicle market for the first time. As today's largest automaker, Toyota Motor has strong brand influence both in Japan's domestic market and in the international market, and its models are introduced in almost every area.

It is reported that this new mini-car does not have Toyota's own production, but is handed over to the Japanese Daihatsu Motor Co., which is known as the "small car expert." Although it is only a lightweight mini car, the official will still provide users with L, X and other versions for consumers to choose. Different versions of the models differ in front face, tail design, and hub shape.

In terms of power, the Pixi Space model has two power options, and the flagship model will carry a 660cc turbocharged gasoline, covering derivatives such as L, X, Custom X, Custom G, and Custom RS. Among them, L has only front-wheel drive mode, while other models can choose front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configuration; in terms of transmission, all models of the new car are equipped with CVT continuously variable transmission, in addition to the standard pre-drive models, also provide Four-wheel drive model selection.

In terms of selling price, the starting price of the Pixi Space is 1.12 million yen (approximately RMB 94,000), and that of a flagship model equipped with a four-wheel-drive system is 1.161 million yen (approximately RMB 135,000). Although these so-called Kei Cars have experienced a decline in sales in Japan’s domestic market in recent years, the relative low prices and the advantages in taxes and fees are still highly appreciated by consumers. The future market outlook is still worth looking forward to, and it is urgent to recover. The Toyota Motors will certainly not easily give up this homegrown hot market segment.

It is reported that the very distinctive models of the Japanese mini-vehicle market have advantages in taxation and insurance and are very popular. However, the engine displacement should not exceed 660 cc, and the upper limit of the body length and width should be 3.4 meters, 1.48 meters and 2 meters respectively.

Currently, Daihatsu Industries, which is currently 51% owned by Toyota, is the group's main mini-car maker. In 2010, it sold 528,000 vehicles. Toyota announced in September last year that starting with the Pixis Space, Toyota will launch three mini-vehicle models.
