Where is the future of polyacrylamide?

By 2006, the annual production capacity and output of polyacrylamide in China had been increased to 500,000 tons/year and 32 tons/year respectively. In 2006, the apparent consumption of polyacrylamide in China was approximately 317,700 tons, of which, the consumption of polyacrylamide in oil extraction accounted for approximately 78.5% of the total consumption, and the area of water treatment accounted for approximately 11%. Accounting for 7.8%, textiles and other areas accounted for about 2.7%.

Polyacrylamide can be used as a flocculant in water treatment, agglomerating and clarifying suspended particles in tap water; as sludge dewatering in sewage treatment; as an important formulation agent in industrial water treatment. At present, many large and medium-sized cities assist with the use of polyacrylamide as a flocculant when water supply is tight or water quality is poor. In wastewater treatment, polyacrylamide has become the main species of flocculants. In 2006, China consumed about 35,000 tons of polyacrylamide in water treatment. Polyacrylamide is mainly used as a resident agent in the paper industry. China is a large country for paper production and consumption. In 2006, the consumption of polyacrylamide in the paper industry was approximately 25,000 tons. It is expected that the demand for polyacrylamide in this field will reach approximately 40,000 tons in 2010. At present, polyacrylamides used for water treatment and papermaking are superior to cationic ones. In the past two years, the production technology of polyacrylamide-based cationic polymer flocculants in developed countries has developed rapidly, accounting for about 60% of the total production volume. And it is still growing at a rate of more than 10% every year. Domestic polyacrylamide flocculants are mostly anionic, cationic only about 10%, and most of the poor quality, which has become a bottleneck restricting the development of China's water treatment and paper industry. Every year, domestic paper mills need to import large amounts of polyacrylamide from Taiwan, Japan and other countries and regions. With the continuous increase in the output of paper and board, the import volume of polyacrylamide has been increasing year by year. From 2002 to 2006, the average annual growth rate of China's polyacrylamide imports was about 15%. In 2006, the import volume reached 26,200 tons.

In the near future, the application of polyacrylamide organic products as a water treatment agent in China will gradually expand with the expansion of the scope of water shortage and increase the national demand for drinking water. At present, the global water consumption of polyacrylamide accounts for 37% of the total consumption, while China is only about 11%, and it has great potential for development. With the acceleration of the construction of water pollution control projects in China, the consumption of polyacrylamide will continue to increase. It is expected that the demand for polyacrylamide in this field will reach approximately 48,000 tons by 2010. In the paper-making industry, due to Japan's Arakawa Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Seiko PMC Co., and Harima Chemical Co., Ltd. increasing investment in polyacrylamide production in China, the import volume of polyacrylamide in the papermaking industry will decrease. In 2010, China's imports of polyacrylamide will be about 20,000 tons. The development of polyacrylamide in the petroleum industry focuses on the development of ultra-high molecular weight varieties. The practice results of Daqing Oil Field show that each ton of ultra-high molecular weight polyacrylamide polymer injected into the formation can increase 150 tons to 200 tons of crude oil. In order to ensure the high output and stable production of the petroleum industry, the promotion of tertiary oil recovery technologies in various old oil fields, the exploitation of offshore oil and gas, and the implementation of national policies for environmental protection, the demand for ultra-high molecular weight polyacrylamide in industries such as urban sewage and industrial wastewater treatment The more urgent it is. Therefore, the country has listed the ultra-high molecular weight polyacrylamide project as the current priority for the development of high-tech industrialization.
