Lithium Resources Development Breakthrough Progress

Recently, Qinghai CITIC Guoan Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. Xitai Jiner Lake 10,000 tons of lithium carbonate project was formally put into production in the Qaidam Basin, which marked a major breakthrough in China's lithium extraction technology and the formation of large-scale production.

The Qaidam Basin is hailed as China's "treasure bowl." In addition to its rich mineral resources such as potash, oil, natural gas, gold, lead and zinc, reserves of lithium are also abundant. According to the data from the Geological Department, currently there are more than 10 proven lithium resource areas in the 33 salt lakes in the Qaidam area, with lithium chloride reserves of 13.915 million tons, ranking first in the country.

The Qaidam salt lake is rich in mineral resources such as potassium, lithium, boron, and magnesium. During the development of lithium resources, key technologies for extraction of lithium from high-magnetic brines have not achieved breakthroughs over the years. In 2002, Qinghai CITIC Guoan Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. began to build an industrial pilot plant with an annual output of 500 tons of lithium carbonate. The test was completed in 2004. After the experts of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Qinghai Province organized the assessment, the overall technology of this test has reached the international advanced level.

Relative to the development of lithium ore, the cost of lithium extraction from lithium salt is lower. West Taijinal Lake accounts for more than half of the lithium in the salt lake brine in the Qaidam Basin. On the 11th, the 10,000-ton lithium carbonate project was put into operation, making this lake the largest lithium salt production base in China.

Ma Jiantang, deputy governor of Qinghai Province, said that the project is the second largest landmark project for Qaidam following the 1 million tons of potash fertilizer. The development of Qaidam resources will occupy an increasingly important position in China's industrial sector.

Lithium is an important strategic resource. It is widely used in emerging fields such as batteries, ceramics, glass, aluminum, lubricants, refrigerants, nuclear industry, and optoelectronics. It is an indispensable important raw material for modern high-tech products. The production and development of lithium products directly affect the development of new industrial technologies to a certain extent. The quantity of consumption represents the development level of a national high-tech industry. At present, the lithium carbonate needed by China basically depends on imports.
