Osram's latest research project launches a new generation of laser rods

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors announced a sub-project of its BRILASI research project to improve the performance parameters of laser rod (laser chip) efficiency, output power, lifetime and beam quality, and combine these properties to create a wavelength of 910~ 980 nm laser chip. In practical industrial applications, these chips have an optical output power of 120 watts and a typical conversion efficiency of up to 70%.

OSRAM has always been a renowned supplier of laser chips and laser rods. This launch of a laser bar with excellent performance and a fill factor of 50% will benefit all laser diode manufacturers. The fill factor of the laser bar is the ratio between the effective width and the total width. This series of laser rods are mainly used for pumping solid state lasers or direct material processing. Based on the existing laser chips with wavelengths between 910 nm and 980 nm and an output power of 120 watts with an efficiency of 70%, we will continue to introduce wavelengths of 808 nm and 880 nm with a power of 120 watts. A laser bar with a conversion efficiency of 62%.

With a 20% fill factor, we are able to create new and better-performing parts that are the best choice for light-coupled applications. The first laser rods to be launched will have a wavelength range of 910 to 980 nm and a recommended output of 80 watts.

New application platform

By using these new and more powerful laser rods, the output power of the system can be greatly improved without affecting the service life. In addition, systems with the same output power are smaller and more reliable.

Samples of new unencapsulated laser rods have been introduced and standard industrial laser rods with a 50% fill factor are expected to be launched in the summer of 2008. In the same fall, laser rods for fiber-coupled applications are available.

From research and development to practice

The BRILASI research project (High-brightness, high-power laser diode FKZ 13N8601 for industrial applications) was initiated by the German Ministry of Education and Research and executed by the German Society of Engineers (VDI), coordinated by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. The project team consists of representatives from laser systems, end users, and representatives of research institutions. The project aims to develop efficient and reliable laser diodes for industrial applications. OSRAM has successfully achieved the objectives of this research project, and the new laser rods have been developed with powers of 100 to 170 watts in 20,000-hour constant wave (CW) or long pulse mode (depending on emission wavelength and packaging technology). The key is to optimize the epitaxial structure, especially to minimize power loss. Reducing the series power pack does not increase the loss of light absorption. In addition, the project also improved the laser cavity.
