According to reports, a new study by the International Scientists Group shows that machine learning algorithms can be a powerful medical tool. The team published research results in the journal Nature and managed to create and train artificial intelligence to successfully identify different types of brain tumors in a precise manner.
In order to identify different types of brain cancer, teams need some criteria that computers can use to distinguish them. There are already more than 100 types of brain tumors in medical records. Researchers use a DNA process called methylation as a biological "fingerprint," and teach artificial intelligence to identify which "fingerprints" match specific cancer types. The team entered data for 2800 cancer patients and provided computers with 91 different types of tumors. Then they asked the computer to determine the type of tumor in more than 1,000 known samples.
It turns out that the recognition of the computer is not wrong, and the judgment of the artificial intelligence is correct. Researchers have provided the entire system online free of charge and have used nearly 5,000 times for cancer identification.
The researchers wrote: "Our findings provide a blueprint for the generation of machine learning-based tumor classifiers across other cancer entities."
