The data collected by NLGI shows that China's grease production is significantly higher than that of any other single country. In the Chinese participant pool, 81 companies (representing 79 factories) provided 2014 production figures. These companies produced about 928 million pounds of grease. NLGI recorded data from 16 companies in Asia, the second-largest producer in Asia, producing 176 million pounds. Twelve companies from the Indian region also participated in the survey, with a total output of 168 million pounds. The survey showed that 17.6% of the greases produced in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim (investigation of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim as an area) use calcium soap thickeners, but in the greases produced in China, Japan and India, only Calcium soap thickeners of 9.7%, 5.6% and 3.7% respectively were used.
The 5.1% of products produced in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim contain calcium soap thickeners, which is at least twice as high as in other regions.
The grease produced in the Indian subcontinent contains 3% sodium soap thickeners, and this technique is hardly used in other parts of Asia.
The grease produced in Japan contains 27% polyurea thickeners, far more than in other parts of Asia. Among all types of greases in China, only 3.9% used polyurea thickeners, and no traces of polyurea thickener were used throughout Southeast Asia, the Pacific Rim and India.
The 95% grease produced in Asia uses traditional basic raw materials, while Japan and China use higher-capacity synthetic base oils in the grease formulation, which is about 3.3%. Companies participating in the survey pointed out that 2% of the grease used semi-synthetic base oils.
